Landscaping & irrigation change

How landscaping & irrigation businesses get jobs from permits

Landscapers don't pull many permits themselves, but the jobs that come right before yours do. A new house, a new pool or a big remodel all end with a torn-up yard and an owner who wants it fixed.

Sample The permits below are made up to show the idea. Subscribers get the real ones every morning, with the owner and contractor.

  1. 1 New homes heading for a certificate of occupancy

    Why it's a lead
A new house finishes on bare dirt. The builder needs sod and irrigation done to close, and the new owner wants beds and trees after.
    What to do and when
Call the builder on the permit to quote the sod and irrigation package. Mail the owner a planting offer for after move-in.
    What to say
"When Shellbank Hollow is ready for sod, I can do grade, sod and irrigation in one visit. Want a price?"
  2. 2 Pools that leave a bare yard around the deck

    Why it's a lead
Digging a pool wrecks the back yard. Once the cage is up, the owner is looking at mud, and they've already decided to spend on the yard.
    What to do and when
Mail the owner about four to six weeks after the permit, when the pool is close to done. Offer plantings, sod and drainage around the deck.
    What to say
"Once your pool is finished, the yard around it usually needs sod and plants. I can draw something up for you."
  3. 3 Remodels and additions that tear up the side yard

    Why it's a lead
Additions mean trucks, dumpsters and trenching across the lawn. When the builder leaves, the yard needs repair and the irrigation is often cut.
    What to do and when
Mail the owner near the end of the job. Offer yard repair and an irrigation check.
    What to say
"Construction is hard on a yard. When yours wraps up on Pennywort, I'll fix the sod and check the sprinklers."

The math

A year of the email costs $1,188. If it lands you one sod and irrigation job, it has paid for itself. Everything after that is profit.

And if your first 30 days don't pay off, you get your $99 back. You can't lose money trying it.

Next: pick your towns

You'll get new pools, new homes and remodels: the permits that lead to your work. You can change this any time.
